Archbishop Joseph Dixon

Profile

Ordained in 1829. Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland from 4 October 1852 until his death over 13 years later. His incumbency was characterized by the inauguration of numerous undertakings for the good of the diocese. He was a staunch defender of the Holy See and his denunciation of Napoleon III for complicity in the acts of the Italian revolution was made a subject of complaint to Pope Pius IX by the emperor. Dixon was the author of an Introduction to the Sacred Scriptures, long in use in Catholic seminaries.
