Bishop of Rochester, England in 1539. Bishop of Worcester, England on 22 December 1543. He resigned the see in 1551, but was re-appointed in 1554. Lord President of Wales. Lord Chancellor. Archbishop of York, England on 19 February 1555. He recovered much of the property that King Henry VIII had taken from the diocese for crown use. When Elizabeth ascended the throne of England, Archbishop Nicholas acknowledged her as queen but not head of the Church. He resigned the see in 1559, the last Catholic bishop to hold the see, and retired to Cobham in Surrey, England.
