Archdiocese of Nagasaki, Japan
Founded as the Vicariate Apostolic of Southern Japan on 22 May 1876 by Pope Blessed Pius IX. Elevated to the Diocese of Nagasaki on 15 June 1891 by Pope Leo XIII. Elevated to an archdiocese on 4 May 1959 by Pope Blessed John XXIII. During its founding, the area of the archdiocese was the scene of many martyrdoms and massacres of Christians.
