auxiliary bishop

Oct 142008

An assistant to the bishop of a diocese. Generally, their responsibilities are defined by the bishop. An auxiliary lacks ordinary jurisdiction in the diocese, and does not have the right to succeed as bishop. Auxiliaries are assigned titular sees, which are historical dioceses no longer in existance.
