Bishop of the diocese of London, England. He was the agent of Henry VIII in his divorce proceedings, and was instrumental in the schism with Rome. However, he opposed the changes of the Reformation, and reconciled with to the Church. He was then imprisoned until the accession of Mary Tudor in 1553. As Bishop of London, he was heavily involved with the ecclesiastical trials and persecutions of heretics. Under Elizabeth I, he was deprived of his office, and on 20 April 1560, he was arrested and lodged in Marshalsea prison. He refused to take the Oath of Supremacy, and died in prison.
