Anti-pope from 997 to 998. While Bishop of Piacenza, Italy he gained a reputation for craftiness and was sent by his godson, Emperor Otto III, to Constantinople to secure a Greek bride for him. He usurped the papacy with the aid of Crescentius in opposition to Pope Gregory V, but fled before the approach of Otto, and was captured, tortured and degraded.
