BASILISSA (Saint) Virgin Martyr (September 3) (4th century) A child of nine years of age who was martyred at Nicomedia, the Imperial residence, during the persecution under Diocletian, about A.D. 303. As she was being led to execution, one of the officials, by name Alexander, is said to have thrown himself at her feet, declaring his belief in Christ, and to have been forthwith baptised by the little Martyr.
