BEATRICE of ESTE (Blessed) Virgin (January 18) (13th century) An Italian princess who, on the eve of her wedding-day, on receiving the news of the death in battle of her affianced husband, resolved on giving herself entirely to God, and founded a monastery near Ferrara, which she governed for many years, and where she passed away, A.D. 1270. An aunt of this Saint, also by name Beatrice, like her, attained to the honours of the Altar.
