CEOLFRID (Saint) Abbot. (September 25) (8th century) Abbot of Jarrow and of Wearmouth, where he worthily filled the place of his master, Saint Benedict Biscop. Ceolfrid is famous as the teacher of the Venerable Bede, who has written his life. He was learned and a persevering student, as well as a man of wonderful holiness of life. He died on a pilgrimage to Rome (A.D. 716), at Langres in France, whence his sacred remains were afterwards restored to Jarrow.
