CRESCENTIANUS (CRESCENTINUS) (June 1) (Saint) Martyr (3rd century) A Roman soldier, a veteran, who retired to lead a hermit’s life in a solitary place near Citta di Castello (Tiphernum) in the Apennine Mountains, but who, delated as a Christian, was put to the torture and beheaded (A.D. 287). He is often represented by artists as clad in a deacon’s dalmatic, though in all probability he remained all his life a layman.
