(Saint) Martyr (November 18) (4th century) A Roman soldier who, during the reign of the persecuting Emperor Diocletian, on proclamation being made that all who refused to sacrifice to the gods were to be treated as being unworthy of wearing the military cingulum or belt, at once cast his own away. Sentenced to death, he was thrown to drown in the River Orontes (A.D. 303 about).
