Cardinal, Archbishop of Milan, Italy. He was a cousin of Saint Charles Borromeo, possessed extraordinary erudition, and was a model of episcopal zeal, an indefatigable preacher, a reformer of abuses, and an apostle of religious education. During the famine and pestilence in Milan in 1627 and 1628, he fed 2,000 poor daily, and inspired his clergy with a devotion immortalized in Manzoni’s Betrothed. He founded the Ambrosian Library, and wrote numerous works on various ecclesiastical sciences.
