Cardinal Stephen Langton

Profile

Studied at the University of Paris, France, and taught theology there. Created cardinal-priest of San Crisogono in 1206 by Pope Innocent III. Archbishop of Canterbury, England on 12 June 1207; his brother Simon served as his Archdeacon. Combining scholarship and statesmanship, he is noted for his division of the Bible into chapters. As leader of the barons in their struggle against King John for constitutional liberty, Langton wrote the Magna Carta, and with the barons, forced John to sign it in 1265. He drew up an important code of canons for the See of Canterbury.
