Profile

Tribune in the imperial Roman army in the reign of Emperor Decius. Anastasius converted when he saw the courage and faith of martyrs that he was torturing to death. Soon after, Anastasius was arrested for his new faith and martyred with all his family and servants.

Youngest of nine children in a peasant farming family. His father died when Claudio was nine years old. Drafted into the Italian army at age 15, he served three years. Sculptor, studying and graduating with honours from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Italy in 1929. Professed brother of the Order of Friars Minor in 1933. Known for his life of prayer, his work with the poor, and his unquestioned artistic skill.

Born a prince, the son of King Saint Canute of Denmark. Raised in the court of his maternal grandfather, Robert de Frison, Count of Flanders (part of modern Belgium. Fought in the Second Crusade. Succeeded Robert II as count of Flanders. Married into the family of the Duke of Clermont (in modern France. His rule was a continuous defense of the poor against profiteers of his time, both clerical and lay. Called the Good by popular acclamation. Reformed laws to make them more fair, supported the poor, fed the hungry, walked barefoot to Mass each day. Martyred in the church of Saint Donatian of Rheims at Bruges by Borchard, part of a conspiracy of the rich whom he had offended. He is venerated at Bruges.

Soldier. He was on duty when Saint Julian of Alexandria and Saint Cronion Eunus were being led to their deaths. When Besas tried to shield the two from spectator abuse, he was seized by the mob, and killed in the street. His story was recorded by Saint Dionysius of Alexandria.

Courtier and advisor of Austrasian King Theodebert II. Soldier. Married the Lady Doda. Father. From his son Ansegisel and Saint Begga of Ardenne came the Carolingian kings of France. Widower. In 610, when Arnulf was about to become a monk at Lérins, he was appointed bishop of Metz, France. He played a prominent role in affairs of state, was instrumental in making Clotaire of Neustria king of Austrasia, was chief counselor to King Dagobert of Austrasia. In 626 Arnulf resigned his see and retired to a hermitage near the abbey of Remiremont.
