Novatian

Roman theologian, the first to write in Latin. Espoused Montanism. Second anti-pope (251-258), opposite Saint Cornelius. Novatianists sought to deny penance to sinners. He and his followers were excommunited in 251; his followers were formally reunited with the Church by the Council of Nicaea in 325. Novatian was killed during the Valerian persecutions in which a Christian was a Christian was a victim. Two of Novatian's treatises, On the Trinity and On Jewish Foods have survived.
