Christian denomination organized in Munich, Germany in 1871 by Roman Catholics who protested the dogma of personal infallibility of the pope in all ex cathedra pronouncements; the dogma was proclaimed by Vatican Council I. Old Catholics conduct services in the vernacular, priests may marry, and there is intercommunion with the Church of England. There are approximately 250,000 Old Catholics.
