[Ephesus]
City in Lydia, Asia Minor, capital of Proconsular Asia; one of the seven churches to whose bishops Saint John was commanded to write in the 1st chapter of Revelations. To the faithful chiefly in this city Paul addressed his Epistle to the Ephesians. It became an archdiocese and is now a titular see. There was held the Third General Council and also the Robber Council of Ephesus.
