Profile
Soldier and convert. He graduated from West Point in 1832, was military aide to General Winfield Scott from 1837 to 1841, and brigadier-general of volunteers in the Civil War. For bravery at the Battle of Fair Oaks, he was made brigadier-general in the regular army, a post he resigned in 1864. He wrote Fifty Years Observation of Men and Events in 1884.
