Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't you have anything on Saint name-here? (often asked in an offended tone)
As mentioned elsewhere, there are over 10,000 named saints; Pope John Paul II alone has canonized hundreds in his time on the throne. I'm not trying to slight a person, a nation, an order, a name, an ethnicity, or any other designation or grouping; I just haven't been able to get everyone listed yet. (Note the word "yet"; I'm not finished.)

Who's the patron saint of name-of-topic?
Check the topic list, or do a search. I've included a lot of synonyms in the topic list, and the search engine indexes every word, so you can probably find what you're looking for through them.

I checked the topic list and ran a search, but I still can't find a patron of name-of-topic. What's the deal?
Not every field, hobby, profession, or activity has a patron saint. Conversely, there are patrons of professions and other topics that are basically extinct. (When was the last time you met a professional fuller?)

While there are some saints whose area of patronage has been "assigned", patronage usually derives from popular devotion by the people associated with that topic - fullers and farriers actually asked for intervention by their patrons, who were usually people who had been in the same trade, same physical or spiritual condition. Many of these devotees learned about the saints through their guilds, who chose the patrons for the reasons listed above.
