Father Pierre-Marie-Joseph Coudrin

[Father Pierre-Marie-Joseph Coudrin]Profile

Ordained in 1792 in the Archdiocese of Paris, France. His ordination was performed in secret because of the anti-Church persecutions of the French Revolution, and Coudrin had to immediately go into hiding. He finally ventured out to begin a covert ministry in the area of Poitiers, France.

At one point Coudrin received a vision of being surrounded by priests, brothers and nuns, all wearing white albs. In 1794 he met Henriette Aymer de Chevalerie who, while in prison, had received her own vision calling her to service to God. On Christmas Eve 1800, knowing they could face the guillotine for their actions, the pair acted on their visions, founding the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Picpus Fathers) to teach children, preach parish missions, and support seminarians. By the time of Father Pierre’s death there were 276 fathers and brothers and 1,125 sisters. His Cause for Canonization has begun.
