Le titre sans aucun doute fixé par Saint Benedict et donné au supérieur d'un monastère de moines ayant la nature d'une famille privée et installe l'endroit, comme plusieurs branches de l'Ordre de Saint Benedict, en incluant les Dominicains de Saint Benedict, les cisterciens des Trois Observations, le Camaldolese, Vallumbrosans, Silvestrians, Olivetans, quelques maisons de Canons Réguliers, de l'Antonians, du Arménien Bénédictins et du Basilians et du Premonstratensians. Le bureau est électif et pour la vie, le choix étant fait par le scrutin secret des membres déclarés de la communauté. L'autorité d'un abbé est double : un, paternel, par lequel il administre la propriété de l'abbaye et maintient la discipline et l'observation de la règle et des constitutions de l'ordre; l'autre, quasi-épiscopal.
