L'antipape de 251 à c.258. Sa première vie nous est connue principalement par les lettres de Pape Cornelius à Fabius d'Antioch. Pendant qu'un catéchumène il était cru être possédé et a été par conséquent exorcisé. À cause d'une maladie grave il a été baptisé par affusion, mais n'a pas été confirmé, qui l'a rendu irrégulier pour l'ordination. Malgré l'opposition il a été décrété par Pape Fabian dans 250 et nommé par la suite à une position proéminente à Rome. Il a espéré être élu comme le successeur de Fabian qui était martyred dans 251. Cornelius a été choisi et Novatian s'est fait être élu par trois Italien ruraux évêques. Le Conseil de Carthage dans 251 a soutenu les revendications de Cornelius qui a excommuniqué immédiatement Novatian. Il a remis une église schismatique sur pied, s'est nommé comme le chef de la secte et avait un grand nombre d'adhérents qui ont élargi la portée de son hérésie. La secte prospérait encore dans l'Orient au 5ème siècle. Bien que Saint Jerome mentionne un certain nombre d'écritures de Novatian, seulement deux ont baissé à nous, De Cibis Judaicis et De Trinitate. He set up a schismatical church, appointed himself as head of the sect, and had a large number of adherents who enlarged the scope of his heresy. The sect was still flourishing in the Orient in the 5th century. Though Saint Jerome mentions a number of writings of Novatian, only two have come down to us, De Cibis Judaicis and De Trinitate. That Novatian died a martyr‘s death during the persecution of Valerian is doubtful.
