Portato a genitori greci pagani, e forse uno schiavo. Uno dei più primi convertiti a Cristianesimo. Il medico generico, studiando in Antioch e Tarso. Probabilmente viaggiato come dottore di una nave; molte società di beneficenza di medici generici sono chiamate per lui. La leggenda ha questo lui fu anche un pittore che può aver fatto ritratti di Jesus e Mary, ma nessuno gli è stato attribuito mai correttamente o definitivamente; questa storia, e l'inspirazione che il suo Vangelo ha dato sempre agli artisti, condussero al suo patrocinio di loro.
