La parola è derivata dal nome Simon Magus, un illusionista convertito, che provò a comprare i Regali del Fantasma Santo da Santo Peter l'Apostolo, nei primi anni della chiesa (le leggi 8). Episcopal sees were bought by profligate men without training and even without Orders. The Church has repeatedly and strongly condemned this vice in the encyclicals of Popes and Synods, but never was her condemnation more strong than in the decrees of Papa Santo Gregory VII.
