Son of the chief of the Zanaki. Obtaining a teaching certificate, he taught biology and English. First Tanganyikan to attend a British university, obtaining degrees in history and economics in 1952. Taught history, English and Kiswahili at Saint Francis’ College, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Colonial legislator in 1958. First prime minister of newly independent Tanzania on 9 December 1961. President of Tanzania from 1962 till 1985. Fought political corruption. Married lifelong layman. Attended Mass daily throughout his public career. Known for his frequent fasts and his dependence on his faith. His Cause for Canonization has begun.
