Borromeo, Federico
(1564-1631)
Cardinal, Archbishop of Milan, born Milan; died there.
He was a cousin of Saint Charles Borromeo, possessed extraordinary erudition, and was a model of episcopal zeal, an indefatigable preacher, a reformer of abuses, and an apostle of religious education.
During the famine and pest at Milan, 1627-1628, he fed 2,000 poor daily, and inspired his clergy with a devotion immortalized in Manzoni's "Betrothed."
He founded the Ambrosian Library, and wrote numerous works on various ecclesiastical sciences.
