Chamberlains of Honor of Sword and Cape

The restriction of the Privy Chamberlains of Sword and Cape to those of the nobility or of high distinction excludes many meritorious persons, so the chamberlains of honor were founded some time before Clement VII. They have the same costume, with slight variations, as privy chamberlains, but are not allowed in the privy antechamber. They are divided into two classes, chamberlains di numero (at present five in number), having a life tenure; and supernumeraries, at present numbering 218. They receive a slight compensation for their services. The minimum age requirement for chamberlains of sword and cape is 30 and their immediate superior is his excellency, the majordomo to His Holiness. Transference from one class to another is not allowed.
