Cosmas of Jerusalem; Hagiopolltes

Eigth century hymn-writer, born probably Damascus; died probably Maiuma, port of Gaza, southern Phenicia. He was foster-brother of Saint John of Damascus and entered with him the monastery of Saint Sabas, near Jerusalem. In 743 he was appointed Bishop of Maiuma. Among the best representatives of later Greek classical hymnology, especially of the liturgical chants known as "Canons," his hymns are in general use in the Orthodox Greek Church, which commemorates him, 14 October.
