Founded as the Vicariate Apostolic of Colorado and Utah in 1868.
The name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Colorado in 1870.
Elevated to a diocese on 16 August 1887 as a suffragan of Santa Fe.
Elevated to an archdiocese on 15 November 1941.
