Comprises Northumberland and Durham. Founded in 674 as an abbey by Saint Wilfrid of York. Eleven of the early bishops were saints. Suppressed during the confiscation of churches. Revived as the Vicariate Apostolic of Northern District on 30 January 1688. Elevated to the diocese of Hexham on 29 September 1850. Name changed to the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle on 23 May 1861.
