Hans Holbein the Elder

[Hans Holbein the Elder] Painter, born Augsburg, Germany, c.1460; died Isenheim, 1524. Little is known of his life. In art he was influenced by Roger Van der Weyden, and as an excellent painter of religious subjects he is well represented in the galleries of Germany. His masterpiece is "The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian" in the Old Pinakothek of Munich. Father of Hans Holbein the Younger.
