It was evangelized by Irish monks early in the 10th century, became Lutheran in the 16th century, and received Catholicism again c.1850, though Catholics constitute only a small minority of the inhabitants. It constitutes a prefecture Apostolic, established on 12 June 1923. It was elevated to a Vicariate Apostolic on 6 June 1929, and the diocese of Reykjavik was established on 18 October 1968. See also:
