Pope John II; Mercurius

[Pope John II] Reigned from 533 to 535. Born in Rome, Italy; died there. He was the first to change his name on assuming the papacy as his birth name (Mercurius) was derived from that of a pagan god. Little is known of his pontificate except that he caused Contumeliosus, Bishop of Riez, to be confined in a monastery for his crimes.
