Marian Priests

Term applied to English priests ordained in or before the reign of Queen Mary (1553-1558) and surviving to the reign of Elizabeth, used in contradistinction to Seminary priests, ordained abroad at Douai, etc. According to Dom Norbert Birt, nearly 2,000 of the former refused to conform to Elizabeth's decrees and thus lost their livings.
