Established as a Prefecture Apostolic in 1824.
Elevated to the Vicariate Apostolic of Alabama and the Floridas on 29 August 1825.
Elevated to the diocese of Mobile on 15 May 1829, a suffragan of the archdiocese of New Orleans.
The name was changed to the diocese of Mobile-Birmingham on 20 April 1954.
The diocese was split and the name changed back to the diocese of Mobile on 28 June 1969.
Elevated to an archdiocese on 29 July 1980.
