Saint Otto

Born c.1060; died 1139. Bishop of Bamberg, Germany in 1106. A Swabian noble, he entered the service of Henry IV with whom he sympathized in the investiture conflict, though never himself a partisan; received the pallium from Pope Paschal IV. He founded and reformed numerous monasteries and evangelized the Pomeranians. Apostle of Pomerania. Canonized, 1189. Feast, 30 September and 30 June.
