Bobbio, Italy

City, abbey and diocese in the Trebbia River valley, Piacenza province, Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy; also known as Bobium or Ebovium.

Saint Columbanus of Bobbio established a monastery there c.613. It became a center of learning during the Middle Ages, renowned for its library, but declined through the 15th century, and was suppressed by the French in 1803.

The diocese dates from 1014. On 4 August 1923 it was united with the Territorial Abbey of San Colombano to form the diocese of Bobbio-San Colombano. On 23 September 1986 it was united with the archdiocese of Genova to form the Archdiocese of Genova-Bobbio. Notable bishops include
