Salmanasar

(Assyrian: the god Shulman is the leader)

Name of four Assyrian kings, one of whom deserves special mention. Salmanasar IV (726-722 B.C.), waged war against the King of Israel, Osee, for refusing tribute, and besieged Samaria for three years; but it was his successor Sargon who took the country in 721 (4 Kings 17). This marks the end of the Kingdom of Israel and the beginning of the Assyrian captivity.
