Frank Duff
Profile
Eldest child of a wealthy family. Joined the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in 1913. In 1916 he wrote Can we be Saints? in which he says that all people are called to be saints, and it is Christianity that provides the means to do it. In 1917 he read True Devotion to Mary by Saint Louis de Montfort and began to understand the importance of Mary in the life of the laity. Founded the Legion of Mary on 7 September 1921, an apostolic organization of lay people dedicated to their spiritual development, and to the advance of the reign of Christ through Mary; there are nearly three million active members world wide and many more auxilliaries. Pope Paul VI invited him to attend the Vatican Council II as a lay observer, and in private audience acknowledged the contribution of Frank and the Legion. An avid correspondent, he left over 200,000 letters.
