(c.800-856) Confessor, Bishop of Le Mans. As a youth he lived at the court of Charlemagne and Louis I. He became a priest at 21 years of age and bishop nine years later, and was distinguished by his public spirit in building aqueducts, as well as churches and monasteries. His fidelity to Charles the Bald resulted in his expulsion from his see, but Gregory IV reinstated him. Feast, 7 January.
