Founded in Egypt by Saint Mark the Evangelist. Notable among its early patriarchs were Saint Athanasius and Saint Cyril. In the Coptic Rite, Hermopolis and Thebes are suffragan sees. Patriarchal residence is Cairo. In the Latin Rite, the patriarchate is titular only.
