Cardinal-bishop of Sabina in December 1261. Papal legate. 183rd pope. Worked against the House of Hohenstaufens by confirming the agreement that gave Charles of Anjou, youngest brother of King Louis IX, the crown of Naples and an army so he could keep it. When Conradin attacked Charles, Clement preached crusade against him. Strong opponent of nepotism in church and civil government. Patron of Roger Bacon.
