Profile
Second century pope. Determined the different prerogarives of the clergy, and defined the grades of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Instituted godparents at baptism to assist the newly born during their Christian life. Decreed that all churches be consecrated.

Formerly listed as a martyr, but there are no direct records, and it was assumed because so many of the early popes were martyred.
