  • Latin: pro, in front of; sternere, to cast down

Article

To cast oneself down in front of anyone in adoration, petition, submission, or contrition. For instance, at the beginning of the Mass on altar. To kneel on both knees and simultaneously bow the head is also sometimes called prostration.
