O título definitivamente fixado por Santo Benedict e dado ao superior de um mosteiro de monges que têm a natureza de uma família privada e ajusta a posição, como vários ramos da Ordem de Saint Benedict, inclusive os Monges Pretos de Saint Benedict, monges cistercienses da Três Observância, o Camaldolese, Vallumbrosans, Silvestrians, Olivetans, algumas casas de Cânones Regulares, do Antonians, do Armênio Membros da Ordem de São Bento, e do Basilians, e o Premonstratensians.
