A palavra é conseguida do nome Simon Magus, mágico convertido, que tentou comprar os Presentes do Espírito Sagrado de Santo Peter o Apóstolo, nos primeiros anos da igreja (leis 8). A simonia é o vício sacrílego de comprar escritórios eclesiásticos e benefices ao qual a jurisdição espiritual é anexada. Ele foi comum durante as Idades Meias, mas especialmente nos 9os e 10os séculos, e foi uma das causas remotas mas potentes da revolta Protestante no 10o século. Episcopal vê foram comprados por homens devassos sem treinamento e até sem Ordens. A igreja condenava repetidamente e fortemente este vício nas encíclicas de Papas e Sínodos, mas nunca foi a sua condenação mais forte do que nos decretos de Papa Santo Gregory VII.
