Monastery in Yorkshire, England, founded in at the invitation of Thurston, Archbishop of Yorkshire. It became a brilliant centre of learning and holiness. Melrose was its most important offspring. It was confiscated by King Henry VIII; the estate is now in the possession of the Duncombe family, and the buildings have fallen into ruin.
