Studied in Constantinople. Adult convert to Christianity. Hermit in Syria for eleven years. Founded monasteries in Mesopotamia, Constantinople and Gomon. Missionary to Antioch, but with no success. Converted Rabulas, bishop of Edessa. Alexander began the liturgical service in which his monks sang the Divine Office continuously day and night.
