Almost nothing is known of his life before his ascension.
Adrian opposed the Roman aristocratic faction led by the corrupt bishop Formosus, and arrested the more violent members of the group.
He died en route to Worms, Germany where he was going to help settle the question of succession to Emperor Charles the Fat.
