Venerable Bernarda Heimgartner

- Educated in Fislisbach.
Her father died when Bernarda was 14 years old.
She worked as a children's nurse in Baden, Switzerland from 1838 to 1840.
She studied with the Capuchinesses in Baden from 1840 to 1841, and with the Ursulines in Freiburg, Germany from 1841 to 1843.
In 1843 she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Divine Providence in Ribeauville, Alsace, making her profession at Altdorf on 16 October 1844.
Founded and served as first Superior General of the Sisters of the Holy Cross of Menzingen.
She led her congregation during a time when convents were considered by many to be a threat to public safety as they did not answer to the state, and were suspected of affiliation with the banned Jesuits.
